After a mural was vandalized just a day after the Great Highway's closure for a new park, local artist Emily Fromm led a community effort to restore it. Many residents and artists came together to support the initiative, deepening ties between the neighborhood and the artwork. The vandalism, while random, likely connected to the divisive nature of the highway closure, which voters approved. Fromm emphasized the importance of community involvement in art, making memories and fostering ownership among residents.
I'm so grateful that the community wanted to respond and be here with me today to repair the artwork. It means so much to have the support of so many neighbors and fellow artists.
In a lot of past projects I've done, I love to bring community volunteers in to deepen the ties between the artwork and the neighborhood it's for. Give people a chance to create memories.
