10 years after 22nd and Mission fire, artist trades memories of a burnt building for art
Briefly

After witnessing a devastating fire that claimed lives and homes in her neighborhood, 16-year-old Alejandra Rubio transformed her grief into art. Initially hesitant to share her work depicting the burnt Mission Market, she later created posters and stickers to honor the community's trauma. Rather than profit from her art, Rubio embarked on a mission of free distribution, engaging her neighborhood in a scavenger hunt for art as a means of coping and healing. Now as a R.A.I.C.E.S fellow, she aims to expand her impactful project further.
I felt uncomfortable profiting off of peoples' collective grief and trauma. I myself am still grieving.
I made it kind of like a scavenger hunt. I would hide them in places, post it, and then tell people to go and find them.
