As of Thursday, 20 dogs at Chesterfield Square had tested positive for giardia, according to L.A. Animal Services. The common and highly contagious parasitic infection can cause diarrhea in animals as well as people. The first case was found Jan. 22. Walks, play groups and adoption meetings outside kennels were paused for a two-week isolation period to find and treat affected dogs, but that period was extended indefinitely by the shelter's team of veterinarians.

I call on Santa Clara County DA Jeff Rosen or California Attorney General Rob Bonta to investigate and prosecute all municipal, state and federal parties who are in violation of SB 34 and SB 54. We have these laws for a reason, and no one should be above the law. These state laws were enacted to protect our privacy, and if our public officials cannot adhere to the laws, we must insist on immediately disabling all of these cameras being misused in violation of these laws. It is particularly unnerving that this information is being shared with federal agencies.

The union representing the frontline workers at San Jose's beleaguered Animal Care Center has implored the city to hire a new director from outside the ranks, warning that a failure to do so would erode trust, morale and service and perpetuate the very dysfunction the city claims to want to fix. Although the city is pushing forward with recommendations from a scathing audit that took the shelter to task for operating above capacity and poor conditions,

"It's an alpaca-lypse at Nevins Farm," the MSPCA said, referencing its Methuen shelter.
