Police: Couple made up 'free sign' story to get rid of dog in Attleboro
"The couple left the dog with an employee in Seasons Corner Market in Attleboro just before 2 a.m. Monday, police previously said. A customer offered to take the dog overnight, and the manager reported the incident to police. The couple told the market clerk Monday that the 6-month-old Yorkshire terrier was in a cage "on the side of the road and (they) did not know what to do with it," police said."
"The cage had a dog bed, a blanket, a pink dog dish, and a small sign that said "free," the Chronicle reported at the time. Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney initially said the department wanted public assistance to find the owner. However, after reviewing security footage and interviewing the couple, the police determined their story was fabricated, and the couple admitted to lying, Heagney reportedly said."
A couple left a 6-month-old Yorkshire terrier with an employee at Seasons Corner Market in Attleboro just before 2 a.m. They told the market clerk the dog had been in a cage on the side of the road and they did not know what to do with it. The cage contained a dog bed, a blanket, a pink dog dish, and a small sign reading "free." Police initially sought public assistance to find the owner after the manager reported the incident. Security footage and interviews showed the couple fabricated the story and they admitted to lying. The wife had agreed to adopt the dog and took it home before her husband refused. The dog is in the city animal shelter and the couple will not face animal cruelty charges. Officials report strong public interest in adopting the dog and aim to find a loving home.
