"I'm the best boy ever! I love to play. I love snuggling and I'll let you put silly costumes on me,"
"What happened to Ms. Wright and her husband was completely preventable if the City had simply followed its own policies and procedures that are designed to keep members of the public safe from potentially dangerous dogs."
"They made a choice [to adopt Valerio out], and now I have to live my life like this,"
Valerio, a gray pit bull described as playful and affectionate, was adopted from a South Los Angeles city animal shelter in August by 75-year-old Kristin Wright. Two days after adoption, Valerio attacked Wright, breaking her right arm and peeling skin from her left arm; she later discovered Valerio had been surrendered after biting a previous owner's elderly mother in the face. Wright underwent multiple surgeries and continues to suffer nerve damage and pain that impairs her work as an accountant. Wright and her husband sued the city and settled for $3.25 million. The shelter formalized a disclosure policy to check bite histories before adoptions.
