The veteran had a rough season in Kansas City last year, slashing just .212/.272/.265 in 46 games with the Royals. He suffered an adductor strain and an elbow injury that sent him to the injured list for two separate stints, and after a trade deadline that saw Kansas City add Mike Yastrzemski, Adam Frazier, and Randal Grichuk to the roster the team had little room to squeeze him back onto the roster when he was healthy enough to return.
Detroit Pistons All-Star Cade Cunningham has purchased a minority ownership stake in his hometown MLB team, the Texas Rangers, he told ESPN's Shams Charania on Thursday. Cunningham is among the athlete investors in Sportsology Capital Partners, which recently completed the minority investment in the Rangers. The 24-year-old Cunningham is a native of Arlington, Texas. He threw out a first pitch before a Rangers home game against the Baltimore Orioles last July.
The Rangers solidified the top of their rotation when they landed left-hander MacKenzie Gore in a trade with the Nationals. Gore, Jacob deGrom, and Nathan Eovaldi will form what should be a dominant trio, as long as everyone stays healthy. Former top prospect Jack Leiter delivered a solid campaign in his first full-time look at the big league level, likely earning him the No. 4 spot. After that, it gets murky.
A third-round pick by the Padres in 2016, Thompson has pitched in parts of four big league seasons between the Friars and the Nationals. The 6'6″, 240-pound righty been tagged for a 5.21 ERA in 114 innings, with a gruesome 11.81 ERA (16 runs in 10 2/3 innings) this past season skewing that mark a bit. Though Thompson's 2025 performance was rocky to say the least - he also posted an ERA over 6.00 in 16 minor league frames -
Sborz, 32, returns to the team he has spent the past five years with. The highlight of that tenure was 2023. Sborz had an unimpressive 5.50 earned run average that season but the underlying marks were better. His 7.9% walk rate was a bit better than average and his 30.7% strikeout rate was very strong. A small 56% strand rate seemed to push some extra runs across, which is why his 3.75 FIP and 3.05 SIERA were much more optimistic.
The Rangers are looking for several new bats as they look to, as GM Ross Fenstermaker indicated at season's end, improve their on-base percentage and contact skills. Newly installed manager Skip Schumaker has already spoken about finding a new offensive identity. One potential target who had popped up on the Rangers' radar, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar.
Infielder/outfielder Josh Smith has been placed on the paternity list. Right-handers Chris Martin and Cole Winn have each been placed on the 15-day injured list. Right-handers Luis Curvelo and Jose Corniell have been recalled to take two of those spots. Infielder Donovan Solano has had his contract selected to take the third. To open a 40-man spot for Solano, right-hander Nathan Eovaldi has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
The Reds are still in the Postseason hunt here in the final stages of the season and they could ill-afford a series loss to the Pirates of all teams. Yet, it happened! The pitchers' duel between Paul Skenes and Hunter Greene delivered some prime entertainment. Pittsburgh put up those two runs against Greene while Skenes was nearly untouchable for six innings.
The Rangers will activate Tyler Mahle from the 60-day injured list for Friday's series opener against the Marlins. He is listed as the probable starter against a yet to be announced pitcher for Miami. Texas has a full 40-man roster and will need to designate someone for assignment or transfer one of Marcus Semien, Nathan Eovaldi or Sam Haggerty to the 60-day injured list.
The Rangers decided to add at this year's trade deadline and acquired several arms to beef up the pitching staff. Merrill Kelly was the headliner, but the team also swung deals for Danny Coulombe and in an effort to make up for somewhat lacking production from the club's offense. That strategy, unfortunately, hasn't worked. The Rangers' position in the standings hasn't changed much as they've remained stuck around .500, as has been the case for most of the year.
