Tom Hicks, former owner of Liverpool and Texas Rangers, dies at 79
"The 79-year-old philanthropist owned the NHL's Dallas Stars from 1995 to 2011, during which time the team won the 1999 Stanley Cup. He also owned MLB's Texas Rangers from 1998 to 2010, and the club reached the World Series in his final year with the team. However, his involvement with Liverpool was much more turbulent than his ventures in the US."
"Tom was a close friend and a great partner. He dreamed big and watching him bring the Stanley Cup here to Dallas was something that I will always cherish, Jones said in the statement. Fans could feel the heartbeat of our teams and our community together ... We shared a lot of miles together, and I'll miss him greatly. My heart goes out to his family."
Tom Hicks died aged 79 in Dallas surrounded by family. He owned the NHL's Dallas Stars from 1995 to 2011, and the team won the 1999 Stanley Cup during his ownership. He owned the MLB's Texas Rangers from 1998 to 2010, with the club reaching the World Series in his final year. Hicks acquired a 50% stake in Liverpool in 2007 with George Gillett; that ownership proved turbulent and unpopular and the duo sold the club to Fenway Sports Group in 2010. Liverpool and peers offered condolences. Hicks is survived by his wife, six children and 14 grandchildren; his family said his most cherished title was Dad and that he was constant in generosity and love.
