In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump carried Tennessee's Seventh Congressional District by 22 points. Last night, in a special election to represent the district, the Republican Matt Van Epps won by only nine points, defeating the Democratic State Representative Aftyn Behn. Trump celebrated the outcome on Truth Social as a "BIG Congressional WIN," but the margin of victory in a deep-red district is ominous for Republicans. Van Epps underperformed Trump by 13 percentage points, a sign that the party is vulnerable heading into the 2026 midterms.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will ask the public tomorrow night (Oct. 28) for their ideas on how to fill the vacancy left when the sheriff was fired. The board unanimously ousted elected Sheriff Christina Corpus on Oct. 14. Undersheriff Dan Perea, who was hired by Corpus, has assumed the sheriff's duties but won't be elevated to the title of interim sheriff.

Lee said he wants to calm the "charged atmosphere" in the wake of Kirk's death. Bittner said the violence briefly gave her pause about running for office, but she concluded that "there's no way to solve this problem if we shrink back in fear." Lee, a former Brooklyn Park City Council member, easily won a three-way Democratic primary in August. Bittner, a real estate agent, was the sole Republican on the primary ballot for the seat in the heavily Democratic district.

Drey beat out Republican candidate Christopher Prosch for the Sioux City district, which Donald Trump won in 2024. Drey secured 55 percent of the vote compared to Prosch's 44 percent, giving Democrats 17 seats in the state Senate next to Republicans' 33 and breaking the two-thirds supermajority by one seat. She replaces Republican state Sen. Rocky De Witt, who died from pancreatic cancer in June.

“It's difficult for us, just in a regular election, being a smaller rural county,” said Juan Pablo Cervantes, the registrar of voters for Humboldt County, which has just over 85,000 registered voters. Usually Cervantes and his staff have at least five months of lead time to find voting sites, hire staff and procure all the machines, pens and ballots for a statewide election.
