Newsom sets date for special election to fill Rep. LaMalfa's seat
"California Gov. Newsom on Friday announced that a special election for the congressional seat left open after the death of Rep. Doug LaMalfa will take place on Aug. 4. Under state election law, Newsom had 14 days to issue the proclamation for a special election after LaMalfa's seat became vacant. Congressional District 1 covers a large swath of interior Northern California, including the cities of Yuba City, Chico, Redding and Susanville."
"The special election would fill the congressional seat until the current term ends at the end of 2026. California Republican James Gallagher announced this week that he plans to run in the special election. Meanwhile, a June primary is set to take place featuring a redrawn map for the district that was approved by voters with Proposition 50 to include more Democratic voters. That's if the measure survives court challenges. The general election is in November."
