October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and TikTok has launched a range of new tips videos and pointers to help users improve the security of their profiles, and ensure they avoid common scams and schemes. Because more and more people are falling for online scams, with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center reporting a record $16.6 billion in consumer losses in 2024.

In August last year, LinkedIn launched company page verification, with a limited number of pages able to gain a verification tick in the app. LinkedIn's company page verification essentially sees LinkedIn's team confirming a business's information, so it's not verification in terms of public standing or status, but more a measure of assurance that this is the official presence of said brand.

After receiving an email from pinherocareers.com confirming he got the job, the scammers instructed him to deposit a check via mobile app and wire $5,000 to what they called an 'accredited vendor' to purchase office equipment for remote work.

Promising unrealistic returns is a classic indicator of a crypto scam. Legitimate platforms don't need to entice users with exaggerated claims like making 1 Bitcoin in just days.

Verify the identity of the sender before responding to any communication to avoid falling victim to malicious messaging campaigns.
