Following controversy over its float's concept, the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association has removed audio from their entry in the Jan. 1 Rose Parade, officials said. The float, Pancake Breakfast, includes a giant fire truck modeled after Sierra Madre's Fire Engine #41. One firefighter part of an entourage of three firefighters and the association's three princesses is spraying syrup from a fire hose onto a giant stack of pancakes.
Designed and built by Fiesta Productions Inc., the float is a giant floral tribute to the city. It features a 24 foot Golden Gate Bridge, Victorian Painted Ladies up to eight feet tall, a full 13 foot cable car, and Chinatown's ten foot Dragon Gate. More than 50,000 flowers and natural materials will cover the entire build. During the Winter Walk activation, guests can help decorate three of the float elements: an eight foot Painted Lady, plus the six foot tall letters S and F.
The Michigan State Spartans formally introduced Pat Fitzgerald as their new head coach this week, which came after the team dismissed Jonathan Smith. He led the team to a 9-15 record in his two seasons as head coach, including a 4-8 mark this year. For Fitzgerald, it's his first head coaching job since being fired by Northwestern in 2023 because of a hazing scandal. Fitzgerald was later vindicated after the school admitted he had no knowledge of the alleged misconduct. Fitzgerald will now look to usher in a new era of winning football for the Spartans, who last finished above .500 during the 2021 season.
