Former Derry City defender Cameron McJannet was also on target for Grimsby in a sensational penalty shootout.
"It's very frustrating," he told Amazon Prime. "We showed a glimpse of what we can do at this level, but we haven't been able to show that over the course of these two games. "It's bitterly disappointing, because we were on the right track last season and working really well and playing really good football, so to not be in there this season is a huge blow for us. We missed a massive opportunity over these two games."
We're disappointed with the result - I'm not going to try and diminish the performance and the disappointment - because we set ourselves up to try and be a good cup team this season. We lost to a team who finished above us last year, on penalties. We were the better team for 75 minutes, I felt. I'm disappointed we didn't forced the issue and get the winning goal before we got to penalties.
