In Tangled, Mother Gothel is the selfish, villainous antagonist who has managed to retain her youth by hoarding the healing powers of the magic golden flower. When Rapunzel was born, the powers transferred to the young child's hair, enabling it to grow to an unnatural length. In her attempts to control the power, Mother Gothel kidnaps Rapunzel and keeps her imprisoned in a tower, all while putting up a facade as her overprotective mother.
