Pixar boss slammed for remark about Elio's cut queer themes: 'Unbelievably grim'

These details were gradually removed during production, making the character more masculine following direction from studio leadership. Original director Adrian Molina, who is gay, left the project during a 2023 overhaul. The final film, directed by Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi, contains no inference of the main character being queer. Pete Docter justified the cuts by citing parental feedback about not wanting forced conversations with children, stating Pixar makes movies, not therapy. This decision sparked significant backlash on social media.
