Pixar Cut Elio's Gay Elements to Make a Film That Would "Appeal to Everybody"
"Docter said Pixar found some parents didn't want entertainment to force them to have a conversation they weren't ready for with their children. 'We're making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy,' he said."
"As time's gone on, I realized my job is to make sure the films appeal to everybody."
Pixar's 2025 film Elio received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature but became the studio's biggest theatrical flop. The film underwent significant retooling during production to remove elements suggesting the lead character might be gay. Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter explained that Pixar removed a transgender storyline from the animated series Win or Lose because some parents objected to entertainment forcing conversations they weren't ready to have with their children. Docter stated his role is ensuring films appeal to everybody, marking a shift from Pixar's previous mandate encouraging autobiographically-driven stories like Turning Red, Luca, and Elemental. The studio's newest release, Hoppers, opened at number one with $46 million at the box office.
