Interstate 80 through the Sierra Nevada is closed from Colfax to the Nevada state line because of intense snowfall, high winds, and whiteout conditions.
The fire is now out, but a warehouse in Berkeley is now completely destroyed after a Tuesday morning fire ripped through the place, a fire that was visible from Interstate 80. The Berkeley Fire Department got a call just after 4:30 am Tuesday morning about a giant warehouse fire in the Gilman District that pretty much destroyed that warehouse, as KTVU reports. Berkeley Fire Department deputy district chief Keith May told that station that crews found the building "fully engulfed in fire" upon their arrival.
The detective turned on the emergency lights of their unmarked police car to help what they believed was a stranded driver. After stopping, the detective saw a man standing near the car holding a metal object that police believe he had been swinging at passing drivers. Police said the detective and the man then got into an altercation that ended with the detective shooting him with their service weapon.
If, while driving between San Francisco and Sacramento in 1930, you were suddenly struck by a powerful hankering for dairy, there was only one place on your mind: the Milk Farm. Its reputation was legendary. Pony rides, apple pies and 10 cents for all the milk you could drink. In the early days of the American highway system, there were few places like the Dixon roadside stop.
Crews are turning cars around on westbound Interstate 80 Wednesday afternoon as a heavy snowstorm hits the Tahoe region. Several cars have spun out on the highway, Caltrans said on X, and cars are turning around at the Truckee and Donner Lake interchange. Officials said there is no estimated time of when traffic will resume and travelers should expect major delays.
Construction is near Lake Spaulding, about 25 miles west of Truckee. Caltrans said the work will impact traffic in both directions; crews are slated to begin reducing traffic to a single lane on Sunday at 7 p.m. The agency expects to begin directing motorists headed east onto the new bridge span beginning Tuesday. Work on the westbound bridge is slated for the spring.
A motorcyclist has died after a crash Saturday afternoon on the portion of Interstate 80 through Berkeley. The motorcyclist, who has not yet been identified, was involved in a crash with two other vehicles in the highway's eastbound lanes shortly near University Avenue after 3 p.m., according to a California Highway Patrol spokesperson. Medics pronounced the rider dead at the scene, police said.
