Caltrans to open new bridge on I-80 near Truckee
"Construction is near Lake Spaulding, about 25 miles west of Truckee. Caltrans said the work will impact traffic in both directions; crews are slated to begin reducing traffic to a single lane on Sunday at 7 p.m. The agency expects to begin directing motorists headed east onto the new bridge span beginning Tuesday. Work on the westbound bridge is slated for the spring."
"The Yuba Pass Separation Overhead Bridge Project began in 2022 after Caltrans found that the existing bridges were in poor shape and not meeting load-carrying requirements for freight trucks. Not only is the agency replacing and widening the two bridges, but Caltrans is also constructing retaining walls at the median, updating the drainage systems and adding weather information systems along the roadway."
Caltrans is conducting a $112 million project to replace and widen bridges at Interstate 80 and Highway 20. Crews will reduce traffic to a single lane starting Sunday, shift eastbound motorists onto the new bridge early in the week, and begin westbound work in spring. Lane closures will remain through the week with delays expected to reach at least 30 minutes; two lanes in each direction are planned to reopen by Dec. 19. The project began in 2022 after inspections found the bridges in poor condition and not meeting freight load requirements. Caltrans is adding retaining walls, upgrading drainage, and installing weather systems; funding is largely from Senate Bill 1. Completion is expected by winter 2027.
