When Cjay Roughgarden was crafting what would become the largest public art installation in Golden Gate Park's history, she sought inspiration from her favorite children's book. The Richmond-based artist and fabricator has long been captivated by the story of "Cyrus the Unsinkable Sea Serpent," a 1975 tale of an enormous maritime monster who is urged by a shark to sink a boat of civilians, but overcomes the peer pressure to save them from the dangers at sea.
"The people have spoken and there is overwhelming support for Music Concourse Drive to adopt the moniker 'Claude the Alligator Way,'" said Melgar. "For generations to come, a stroll in the park or a visit to the Academy of Sciences will still remind all of Claude's fans and followers of his impact. With this street name, he will always continue to make San Francisco proud."

Now in its fourth season, the family- and dog-friendly space transforms the JFK Promenade's Golden Mile into a vibrant weekend destination filled with drinks, lawn games, public art, and curated local food trucks. Located just west of the Rose Garden near 14th Avenue East Meadow, the Whale's Tail is open every Saturday and Sunday afternoon (noon to 6pm) through October 2025, plus select holiday Mondays.
