Kevin Epps was convicted in December of involuntary manslaughter for the 2016 shooting of his former brother-in-law and was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison. Judge Brian Ferrall decided against the maximum sentence of 11 years, despite prosecutors' requests for a longer term based on Epps' previous criminal record.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass plans to endorse Antonio Villaraigosa, a longtime compatriot and the city's former mayor, in the 2026 governor's race on Tuesday.
