"ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed Gov. Kathy Hochul for reelection on Thursday, offering the moderate governor some progressive heft as she faces a challenge from her political left in her campaign for a second full term in office. In an op-ed in The Nation, Mamdani, a Democrat, noted his political differences with the governor but wrote that he's "come to trust Governor Hochul as someone willing to engage in an honest dialogue that leads to results.""
"The endorsement further solidifies the alliance between two leaders at opposite ends of the Democratic political spectrum, with Mamdani a young democratic socialist who rode into office promising transformative change and Hochul a centrist, self-described "mom governor" from Buffalo. The governor supported Mamdani for mayor, lending him some establishment credibility during his campaign, and has found common ground with him on shared priorities of affordability and child care."
"After the endorsement, Delgado released a statement that said Hochul "has broken a lot of promises" and hasn't committed to tax increases for the rich or other progressive policies, adding that he's the "partner for any leader who also values these critical measures.""
Zohran Mamdani, New York City's mayor and a democratic socialist, endorsed Governor Kathy Hochul for reelection, lending progressive credibility to her moderate campaign. Mamdani acknowledged political differences but said he trusts Hochul's willingness to engage in honest dialogue that produces results. Hochul and Mamdani have found common ground on affordability and child care, though Hochul has resisted some of his proposals such as higher taxes on the wealthy. The endorsement could strengthen Hochul's standing with left-leaning voters ahead of the June Democratic primary. Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado criticized Hochul's record and presented himself as the progressive alternative.
