AMD has sealed a $1 billion deal with the US Department of Energy to develop two supercomputers, Lux and Discovery, in collaboration with Oracle and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). Both supercomputers will live at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Lux is slated to come online fairly soon in early 2026, with Discovery following in 2029. The safety criteria in the program would examine multiple intrinsic components of a given advanced AI system, such as the data upon which it is trained and the model weights used to process said data into outputs. Some of the program's testing components would include red-teaming an AI model to search for vulnerabilities and facilitating third-party evaluations. These evaluations will culminate in both feedback to participating developers as well as informing future AI regulations, specifically the permanent evaluation framework developed by the Energy secretary.
Faced with a lawsuit, the administration of US President Donald Trump has disbanded a panel of five well-known critics of climate science who issued a controversial draft report questioning the evidence underlying global warming. US energy secretary Chris Wright asserted that the group had accomplished its goal in publishing the first draft, which the Department of Energy (DoE) has declined to withdraw. Two of the panel's members told Nature they plan to continue the work independently.
