A Scituate police officer borrowed a kayak to rescue a golden retriever who'd swum too far out into the ocean on Sunday. Scituate police received a report of a dog failing to respond to calls to swim to shore at Peggotty Beach around 9 a.m. on Sunday. The dog swam 100 yards from the shore, further than its usual swim, and bit onto a buoy mooring, seemingly wanting to bring it back to shore, police say.

Wailea Beach is a series of five pocket beaches, which are part of the Wailea resort complex that is mandated to provide a public right-of-way for visitors," Dr. Beach said in his report. "The white coral sand beach gently slopes offshore and is great for snorkeling when the ocean is calm. The swanky hotels are set back far from the beach, providing a [beautifully landscaped] park, adorned with tropical vegetation and flowering bushes and trees.

Officials initially closed the beloved spot - often ranked among the best in Massachusetts - around noon Thursday while the Harbormaster investigated a report of a sighting, but reopened it just after 3 p.m. due to no further observed shark activity. Thursday's initial advisory also came just one day after officials warned of a strong surf and rip currents expected this weekend.

Cecil the Seagull has become notorious for stealing sandwiches and biting fingers at Waterford Beach Park, creating a fearsome reputation among beachgoers.

"Even as Massachusetts residents are back to enjoying the fresh sea breeze and splash of waves at the beach, pollution is still plaguing too many of the places where we swim. Now is the time to fix our water infrastructure and stop the flow of nasty bacteria and pollution to our beaches," said John Rumpler, clean water director for Environment Massachusetts.
