South Shore officer takes to the sea in a kayak to rescue golden retriever from drowning
"A Scituate police officer borrowed a kayak to rescue a golden retriever who'd swum too far out into the ocean on Sunday. Scituate police received a report of a dog failing to respond to calls to swim to shore at Peggotty Beach around 9 a.m. on Sunday. The dog swam 100 yards from the shore, further than its usual swim, and bit onto a buoy mooring, seemingly wanting to bring it back to shore, police say."
"Officer Bill Crossen, who recently joined the police force, borrowed a kayak from the owner of a nearby home, police say. Crossen got the dog to release the mooring and guided it back to shore. It took Crossen about a half an hour to guide the dog, Gypsy, back to the beach, owner Lauren Sears told Boston 25 News. "Officer Bill kayaked out (and) got so wet."
A golden retriever named Gypsy swam about 100 yards from Peggotty Beach shore around 9 a.m. and did not respond to calls to return. The dog bit onto a buoy mooring, appearing to try to bring the buoy toward shore. Officer Bill Crossen borrowed a kayak from a nearby homeowner, reached the dog, got it to release the mooring, and guided Gypsy back to the beach over roughly a half hour. The owner expressed deep gratitude, and the dog sustained no injuries.
