26-year-old surfer clings to lobster trap buoy to survive strong Santa Barbara area waves
"Never go into the ocean alone - especially in rough conditions,"
"[Having someone with you] can save lives."
"[ease] a touch in the afternoon but [pump] through sundown."
A 26-year-old surfer went night surfing at Haskell's Beach in Goleta and was knocked off his board by high waves. His surfboard washed ashore while a friend called 911 to report him missing. A Santa Barbara County Fire Department rescue crew arrived at 6:28 p.m. and deployed aerial drones, spotting the man about a quarter-mile offshore holding a lobster trap buoy that prevented further drifting. Two water rescue officers pulled him back to shore and he did not require medical attention. Haskell's Beach is known to pump through sundown and volunteers remove derelict lobster traps. From 2016–23 California recorded 3,631 fatal unintentional drownings.
