The Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for 2026 recognize beaches with strong environmental performance, cleanliness, management, and safety. In England, Keep Britain Tidy manages the Blue Flag, a globally recognized label for beaches, marinas, and inland bathing waters. The Seaside Award serves as a nationwide UK symbol for coastal health and safety. To receive a Blue Flag, sites must meet high standards across environmental education and information, cleanliness, environmental and operational management, and safety and facilities. For 2026, 128 sites were awarded, including 126 beaches plus a marina and an inland bathing water. Sixty-three sites met Blue Flag requirements across England from Northumberland to Cornwall, including Whitley Bay.
