Dr. Eric Verdin, CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, advocates for a proactive approach to aging by focusing on lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise along with essential supplements. He highlights vitamin D as particularly important due to its widespread deficiency in the U.S., noting its role in bone health and disease prevention. Verdin encourages individuals to evaluate their health through blood tests and to consider supplements to enhance their longevity and quality of life, especially if they have already established healthy habits.
"Supplementing this is very cheap, it's very safe, and in my opinion is important," Verdin said.
"If a person has those under control and wants to take their health from good to great, evidence suggests certain supplements could help," he said.
"Most people should consider vitamin D supplements, particularly since about 35% of US adults have vitamin D deficiency," Verdin added.
"We're studying how to extend 'healthspan,' which means maintaining faculties that tend to decline with age, such as cognitive ability and mobility."
