Valentine's Day traditions could be threatened by climate change as cocoa production becomes increasingly scarce and expensive. A report by Christian Aid highlights that erratic rainfall and rising temperatures have severely impacted cocoa harvests in key producing regions of West Africa, particularly Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, and Nigeria, which account for approximately 70% of the global supply. Cocoa prices have skyrocketed by 400%, significantly affecting local farmers in these regions and endangering their livelihoods, as ideal growing conditions continue to be disrupted by climate-related phenomena.
Higher temperatures and more irregular rainfall make growing conditions less than ideal for the cocoa tree, which relies on finely-tuned conditions to thrive.
'Growing cocoa is a vital livelihood for many of the poorest people around the world and human caused climate change is putting that under serious threat,' she said.
