Meetings are the main way Airbnb's Brian Chesky gets work done. Yet he says the one-on-one format with a direct report is fundamentally flawed. "Almost no great CEO in history has ever done them," the Airbnb chief said in a recent interview.
Chesky explained that when an employee makes the agenda, they often bring up topics that the manager doesn’t want to discuss, turning the meeting into a therapeutic session rather than a productive exchange.
Despite opposing regular one-on-ones, Chesky acknowledges their importance in specific situations, such as when an employee is navigating personal challenges and needs private support from a superior.
Organizational psychologist Steven G. Rogelberg noted that the benefits of effective one-on-ones can be significant, stating that they can enhance employee engagement, productivity, and overall happiness.
