Just over a month after a devastating five-alarm fire at the historic Red Hook warehouse it called home, Lanoba, a Danish mid-century modern vintage furniture store, has reopened in a temporary space. Lanoba had just moved from New Jersey to Red Hook in May, opening an 8,000-square-foot space at 481 Van Brunt Street, in the iconic Beard and Robinson Stores on the piers on the waterfront.
Lanoba had just moved from New Jersey to Red Hook in May, opening an 8,000-square-foot space at 481 Van Brunt Street, in the iconic Beard and Robinson Stores on the piers on the waterfront. Lanoba founders and married couple Lars Noah Balderskilde and David Singh import containers of furniture and ceramics they source themselves in Denmark and have gained a devoted following for their vast selection and the high quality of their finds.
Tomas Jelinek designed the chest of drawers in 1995 after being inspired by the "somewhat bulbous, bow-shaped drawer fronts on Baroque and Rococo chests of drawers," according to IKEA. While they were being produced, Tomas used plastic to create the fronts, which gave them an almost wavy shape, and they came in fun colors (red being the most popular). Emily has the green version of the IKEA VAJER in her primary bedroom.
"The tragedy is these pieces lived 70 years and were ready to live another 70 years," said David Singh, who co-owns the business with his partner, Lars Balderskilde. "Some are so unique that there are maybe a handful in the world left."
