Freedom came with more decisions than I was used to making. Every day required dozens of small choices: routes, weather, how far was too far, when a short trip became too much.

As someone who has driven a 2001 Isuzu Trooper for most of her life, getting the keys to an electric car made me feel like I was trading in a BlackBerry for an iPhone. With electric cars exploding in popularity, I traveled to sunny California last summer for a weeklong trip in Palm Springs, where I rented an Audi E-Tron Sportback and took it all the way to Joshua Tree National Park.

"One time is enough." That's what I'd heard countless times about visiting Las Vegas before making the trip myself. I'd always wanted to go, if only to have that once-in-a-lifetime experience. From Boston headed home, I met up in the club car with members of a rock band, a secretary, a Peace Corps guy just back from India, and a retired dentist, and we partied night and day, telling stories and laughing our asses off. The Peace Corps guy had a sitar, and would play morning, noon and evening ragas as America rolled by outside.
