This Labor Day weekend, New York City audiences are invited to experience a transformative retelling of William Shakespeare's Pericles through The Public Theater's renowned Public Works initiative. Running August 29 through September 2 at 8 PM, the production will be staged inside the monumental Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights. Known as one of the largest churches in the world, the cathedral provides a soaring backdrop for a work infused with gospel music, community storytelling, and dynamic choreography.
On a short stretch of Cadillac Drive a few hundred feet in plain view of the cameras set up by San Jose to deter illegal dumping TVs, refrigerators, flooring, a dishwasher, shopping carts and an assortment of debris litter the street on a recent morning. It's one of the city's worst hotspots for discarded trash. Four days a week, maintenance worker Javier Valencia loads up the junk onto his truck and cleans up at each stop along his route.
"We want the more bare side to go toward the sidewalk, because we want the tree to grow out. We don't want it to necessarily grow into the sidewalk, because then it protrudes as pedestrians walk by."
