The repaving of parking lots 7 and 8 in downtown Menlo Park has been a long-standing request from community members but is not planned until 2027. Mayor Drew Combs questioned the delays during a City Council meeting, highlighting the poor condition of the lots. The city is cautious about repaving due to the need to identify utility lines beneath the surface and potential installations of electric vehicle chargers. Staffing shortages in the public works department further complicate progress on this capital improvement project.
"That parking lot looks like government doesn't exist. It just seems like a lot of delay," said Mayor Drew Combs regarding the deteriorated condition of lots 7 and 8.
Public Works Director Azalea Mitch emphasized that before repaving, the city must identify utility lines, as the goal is to prevent future disruption post-repaving.
