SF installs new trash cans designed to dispose of pizza boxes in North Beach neighborhood

"SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- People who come to San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood for a slice now have a trash bin big enough for those pizza boxes. North Beach is packed with pizzerias and for years, neighbors and businesses have complained about takeout boxes littering Washington Square Park. "Our existing trash cans here get a lot of love, but the problem is even one pizza box going astray or sideways will clog up the whole thing and ruin it, so we're trying something different here,""

"To try to alleviate this problem, San Francisco's Public Works Department and Recology have installed two custom trash cans. They're designed specifically for the shape and size of pizza boxes."

San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood receives many visitors seeking pizza, producing frequent pizza box litter in Washington Square Park. Neighbors and businesses complained for years about takeout boxes accumulating in and around the park. Existing trash cans often clog when pizza boxes are inserted or become lodged sideways. One stray pizza box can clog a can and ruin it. To address the problem, San Francisco Public Works and Recology installed two custom trash cans designed specifically for the shape and size of pizza boxes to reduce litter and overflowing bins.
