Plug-in hybrids are like communism: great in theory, but often lacking in real-world execution. A car that can run on electricity for nearly all of most Americans' daily drivingabout 30 to 40 milesbut still has a gas engine for longer trips seems like it should be the ultimate do-everything vehicle. In reality, however, it's highly debatable whether owners actually plug them in.

The Seal U sold over 70,000 units in 2025, and it has a lot to do with the price. China missed a top spot on the list of best-selling electric cars in Europe last year, but it made up for it in the plug-in hybrid segment. That's because the BYD Seal U, a crossover that's roughly the same size as a Tesla Model Y, secured the top spot on that list.

Lotus, like other automakers, envisioned a future where it would only build electric cars by 2028. It was ambitious, and it made fans a little reluctant to what the future would offer, but that plan has now been revised, as sales of the very expensive Eletre and Emeya EVs have been anything but stellar. Porsche is significantly changing its product strategy for the following years, after sales of its all-electric models failed to grow as expected. The model, codenamed K1, will become Porsche's first three-row crossover and open a whole new market for the brand as it tries to navigate the tougher-than-expected transition to an all-electric portfolio.

The plug-in hybrid electric option (PHEV) is a versatile solution that is primarily designed to meet the demands of long-distance operations, enabling zero-emission zone compliance. It features integrated e-machine and six-speed powershift gearbox and can run in four different modes: electric, hybrid, charge sustain and forced charging. The electric range is up to 80 kilometres on a single charge, while the electric power output is 290 kilowatts, according to the specifications announced by the OEM.
