Queer and trans people across the United States are facing an increasingly hostile political environment. New York City must be a refuge for LGBTQIA+ people, but private institutions in our own city have already started capitulating to Trump's assault on trans rights. Zohran Mamdani doesn't want you to shop at Starbucks right now. The New York City mayor-elect is urging people not to patronize the iconic coffee chain while baristas remain on strike. "We've just been through this with Bill de Blasio. He was a terrible mayor, the worst that the city's ever had, and Mamdani is trying to beat him. That's not going to be good for the people of New York."
DoorDash has called the proposal "extreme" and said it "puts delivery and the benefits it brings at risk." And "when app lobbyists talk, many Council members pay close attention," writes The City's Claudia Irizarry Aponte.
"Somewhere last night in New York City, a single mother and her children slept at a homeless shelter because you, assemblyman [Zohran Mamdani], are occupying her rent-controlled apartment."
