Erik Bottcher, 46, represents Chelsea, the West Village, and Hell's Kitchen on the New York City Council. He filed paperwork to run for Jerry Nadler's congressional seat after Nadler announced he would not seek reelection. Bottcher raised nearly $700,000 in his first 24 hours, a New York State record for a nascent candidate. He warned that an attack on democracy is coming "at the highest levels of our government" and framed his campaign as a chance for a new generation to lead.
