Columbia student detained by ICE released following Mamdani's direct appeal to Trump | amNewYork
"Just got off the phone with President Trump. In our meeting earlier, I shared my concerns about Columbia student Elaina Aghayeva, who was detained by ICE this morning. He has just informed me that she will be released imminently."
"ICE agents had made misrepresentations of their identities in order to gain access to a Columbia residential building and detain Aghayeva early in the morning, claiming they were searching for a missing person."
"It is illegal in New York State for anyone, including federal officials, to impersonate local officials."
Columbia University senior Ellie Aghayeva was detained by ICE agents who allegedly misrepresented their identities as NYPD officers to gain access to a university residential building. Mayor Zohran Mamdani made an unannounced trip to Washington, D.C., and met with President Trump to advocate for Aghayeva's release. Following their meeting, Trump informed Mamdani that Aghayeva would be released imminently. Aghayeva was subsequently released and posted confirmation on Instagram. Columbia University's acting president confirmed the detention and noted the agents' misrepresentation of identity. The Mayor's Office had requested ICE not relocate Aghayeva to allow her to attend her court hearing in New York. Impersonating local officials is illegal in New York State.
