Columbia University undergraduate Ellie Aghayeva was detained by ICE at her university-owned apartment on Thursday morning. NYC Mayor Zorhan Mamdani met with President Trump and called him regarding Aghayeva's detention. Following this phone call, Trump ordered her immediate release. Aghayeva, a social media influencer with over 100,000 followers, was classified by the Department of Homeland Security as an illegal alien from Azerbaijan whose student visa was terminated in 2016 for failing to attend classes. She had been studying in the U.S. since 2021. Her release represents a reversal of the Trump administration's stated immigration enforcement position.
