Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams gave trans people a huge gift just before leaving office - LGBTQ Nation
"We saw a need after federal budget cuts, and we are responding to it,"
"I don't believe that should happen,"
"I believe that we have become so politically correct that we are incorrect."
Eric Adams allocated $2 million in emergency funds to transgender organizations following sweeping federal aid cuts. The New York City health department will administer the funds, with up to $92,000 awarded to roughly 20 community-based organizations. Most applicants must serve majority transgender, gender-nonconforming, or nonbinary clients. Funds will support health care, housing, legal advocacy, community-building, and crisis response services. The allocation followed Adams' public denunciation of school policies allowing trans students to use bathrooms that align with their gender identity and his stated intent to seek rollbacks. Adams left office December 31; Zohran Mamdani was sworn in the next day.
