MILAN - The contrast after it was over - after your stomach did quadruple axels for three hours, after gold seemed won for Canada and won for the United States and back again - stood as the perfect representation not only for what had just played out, but for what it meant. To two countries. To two teams. To an arena that had long since gnawed its fingernails to the nub.
ANTERSELVA, Italy -- Johannes Dale-Skjevdal was the only biathlete to hit all 20 targets in the 15-kilometer mass start race Friday and skied his way to Norway's 17th gold medal of the Milan Cortina Olympics -- breaking the record for the most golds won by a nation at a single Winter Games. Norway had set the record at the 2022 Beijing Olympics with 16 gold medals.
The sport was sent into turmoil last week when Oskar Eriksson of Sweden accused Canada's Marc Kennedy of breaking the rules by touching the rock again after initially releasing it down the sheet of ice. Kennedy responded with an outburst full of expletives. Several other accusations of double-touching followed, and Canada lost its next match against Switzerland before steadying itself to reach the semifinals.
LIVIGNO, Italy -- Japanese snowboarder Yuto Totsuka won the Olympic gold medal in men's halfpipe at the Milan Cortina Games on Friday as Scotty James repeated as the silver medalist. Totsuka laid down a massive second run that earned him 95 points. James had the last run of the final after he topped qualifying Wednesday. But the Australian fell near the end of his run, failing to improve on his second-run score of 93.50.
Thursday marks the second day of the men's ice hockey tournament at the 2026 Olympics in Milan Cortina. On Wednesday, Slovakia stunned the hockey world by defeating Finland 4-1 in the first game of the tournament. Then, Sweden survived a spirited effort from the host Italians, winning 5-2 after allowing the opening goal in the first period. With four games on the schedule on Thursday, that means eight teams are in action, consisting of all four from Groups A and C.
But the NHL's withdrawal just six weeks before the tournament began improved Slovakia's chances, and with some clutch performances, Regenda and his teammates captured the Bronze Medal, setting off parties and celebrations upon their return to Bratislava. We felt like superstars, which we actually were at that time, Regenda said. It was the first medal ever for Slovakia in hockey. We are forever in history.
We begin our coverage with the downhill aspect of the women's team combined, a new event that those who enjoyed it yesterday know is a terrific addition; the slalom section comes later in the day. In the meantime, we've got the men's slopestyle final in the freeski, USA's Alex Hall hoping to retain his title; his mum is from nearby Bologna, so he'll have family watching, presumably a far scarier proposition than twizzling upside down a million miles in the air.
Two-time Olympic gold medallist Sidney Crosby has been named captain of Canada's men's hockey team at the Milan Cortina Games. The Pittsburgh Penguins superstar captained Canada to a gold medal the last time NHL players participated in the Olympics at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia. Four years earlier, he scored the "golden goal" in overtime as Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in the Vancouver 2010 final.
Since Italy is home to such legendary designers as Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada, and Gianni and Donatella Versace, part of the opening ceremony was dedicated to Milan being one of the fashion capitals of the world. Dozens of models strutted across the stage in impeccable red, white, and green Armani suits, before revealing the Main Model, who wore a custom Armani Privé dress, not a suit, and carried the Italian flag.
But if Rome is Italy's past, Milan is its present and future. It is the country's financial center, home to the Italian stock exchange. It's the world's fashion center, home to luxury brands including Prada, Versace, Armani and Dolce & Gabbana. And it has one of the largest concentrations of millionaires in the world, one for every 12 of the city 1.37 million residents.
Show respect. Be humble and a good Olympic partner. Keep Team USA athletes safe. United States Olympic leaders set out goals Thursday for the Milan Cortina Winter Games that arrive during what they acknowledged is a period of geopolitical turmoil. The days before the opening ceremony Friday saw street protests in Milan against a U.S. federal security plan involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, and organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games quizzed by African members of the IOC
A handful of diverse athletes a pole-vaulter, sprinter, shot-putter, rugby player, and former Olympian in skeleton will compete as Israel's first bobsled team during this year's Milan Cortina Winter Games, unlikely ambassadors of their diplomatically isolated nation. Most of these guys had never touched a sled before this season. Their leader, AJ Edelman, is believed to be the first Orthodox Jew to ever compete in a Winter Games. Another founding member of the team, Ward Farwaseh, will likely to be the first Druze Olympian.
Traditionally, the organizers for an Olympic host city choose each Games' torchbearers. Sometimes they are selected for their athletic achievements, sometimes for their celebrity. (Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams from the gay hockey show likely fall into the latter category.) You can also just apply to be a torchbearer, and citizens who have distinguished themselves through commitment, solidarity, or significant work are often selected.
The Olympic version is a fast-paced race that typically lasts three to four minutes. It's a combination that consists of an ascent with skins - grippy, removable strips competitors use on the bottom of their skis - a section of steep terrain in which competitors carry their skis, and a final fast descent on a manicured, gate-marked slope featuring jumps, bumps and banked turns.
I think anything that is distracting from these Games is sad, right? But we've learned over the many years ... there's always been something that has taken the lead, leading up to the Games," Coventry said. "Whether it has been Zika, COVID, there has always been something.
The build up to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina have been far from ideal. The ice rink has been delayed and riddled with issues. The bobsleigh track has been controversial from the start. History shows that many Winter Olympic hosts have also been plagued by late construction completions and rising costs, but perhaps 2026 represents a tipping point.
Chloe Kim's third run to the Olympics started with the usual questions: How will she handle the pressure? Can she enjoy the journey? How does being famous elevate or diminish the experience? And, of course, will she win her third straight gold medal? Now, comes one that nobody saw coming: Will America's best snowboarder, one of the major attractions of next month's Milan Cortina Games, even make it to the halfpipe?
The design has been revealed and it is a sun-like structure that is inspired by Leonardo's intricate knot patterns. Leonardo spent almost 25 years of his life in Milan and many of his most famous works are from his time in the city. The cauldrons have been designed to open and close with a diameter that expands from 3.1 meters to 4.5 meters and will contain the Olympic flame at their core, encased in a glass and metal container.
Long track speedskating sometimes referred to simply as long track or just speedskating was a part of the original Winter Olympics back in 1924, when only men participated, and is quite different from short track. In most long track events, two skaters compete against each other on a 400-meter oval, racing counterclockwise in an attempt to record the fastest time. There are two lanes, and the athletes alternate which portion of the course they are in during each lap.
Italy's President Sergio Mattarella on Friday called for an Olympic truce to be respected during the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games as conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip continue. Speaking in Rome at the Olympic torch lighting ceremony, Mattarella urged that hostilities stop for the duration of the sprawling winter sport showcase which opens on February 6. "Peace is coded into the DNA of the Olympics... Italy has asked that the truce be renewed and we hope that it is possible," Mattarella said.
