"Don't jump in them. I was jumping in excitement, and it broke,"
"I'm sure somebody will fix it. It's not crazy broken, but a little broken."
"But obviously we are paying maximum attention to this matter, as the medal is the dream of the athletes, so we want that obviously in the moment they are given it that everything is absolutely perfect, because we really consider it to be the most important moment. So we are working on it."
Multiple athletes at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics experienced medals falling off or breaking from their ribbons during opening-weekend celebrations. Women's downhill gold medalist Breezy Johnson said her medal broke when she jumped in excitement. German biathlete Justus Strelow had a bronze fall from its ribbon and a smaller clasp piece break off. U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu posted a clip showing her team event gold detached from its official ribbon. Organizers said they are investigating with maximum attention and emphasized that medals are the athletes' dream and must be perfect. Similar medal-quality issues occurred after the 2024 Paris Games.
