As we walk down Pennsylvania Avenue together, Maria Patricia Corrales describes what Fiesta DC, the nation's largest Hispanic festival, will look like in two weeks time. Corrales, the president of Fiesta DC, points to where a stage will be set up for the annual "Miss Fiesta" beauty pageant, and describes how the smell of frying pupusas will entice passersby. Even as she shares her excitement, she acknowledges that hosting Fiesta DC-this year on September 27 and 28-is a somewhat controversial choice,
'Let's do the Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15.' And the reason why September 15 is to coincide with the celebration of Latin American independence," he said.
Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off Celebration Jumpstart Hispanic Heritage Month at Prince George's Publik Playhouse, where you can observe an exhibit by artist Francisco Loza and see the unveiling of the 2025 Hispanic Heritage Month poster designed by local high school students. The event features children activities, refreshments, dance demos led by Salsa with Silvia Studio, and live music by Verny Varela Band (free).
The Contra Costa County Library is excited to announce that James by Percival Everett is this year's Read Contra Costa book. The Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning novel is a powerful retelling of Huckleberry Finn from its character Jim's perspective. The countywide Read Contra Costa program runs from Sept. 2 through Nov. 8, encouraging residents to read the same book and share their experiences.
