Gerardo "Jerry" Estrada was killed in the Sept. 19 crash, which remains under investigation. The officer driving was responding to a call in the 6100 block of Piedmont Avenue at 7:15 p.m. and headed north on Figueroa Street to help establish a perimeter while police searched for a felony warrant suspect, said Capt. Mike Bland, a department spokesperson. The officer, Bland said, was driving with their siren on and emergency lights flashing when they hit Estrada.
In the video, the officer's car had a minor collision with a car driven by Wilks. As soon as both cars came to a stop so the drivers could assess the damage, Wilks got out and immediately walked toward the driver's side of the officer's car. Wilks was seen yelling at the officer. When the officer got out of his car, he walked in front of it to look at the spot where the collision had occurred. As he walked, Wilks trailed behind him and continued berating him. Then, Wilks suddenly brandished a handgun and hit the officer in the head with it. The officer pulled out his own firearm and shot Wilks multiple times.
This morning, I was in this car accident, he said. Guy cut me off. Big garbage truck the size of a whale. Never seen a garbage truck must've been something commercial, for like, taking away material from construction or something. It was the biggest garbage truck I've ever seen. Anyway, I won't go into the details now. I won't bore you.
"I can't make this up," he writes in a text overlay of the clip, which shows footage taken from his EV. "There's no one on this corner," he says, pointing to one corner of the screen. His post shows two different angles from his car that appear to have been taken at the same exact time. Indeed, the video recorded from the camera located at the front of his car doesn't show anyone standing on the sidewalk or the street.
"Mr Brooks claimed he was sitting in his Porsche, belted up and injured. The dashcam showed him in the bushes. We still don't know what he was doing there but we do know he wasn't in the car."
