In Bugonia, another trippy, absurdist head-scratcher from Oscar-nominated Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos, the talented Texan portrays a disillusioned conspiracist named Teddy who hatches a frightening plan to kidnap the millionaire CEO of a major pharmaceutical company (Emma Stone's Michelle). He thinks she's an alien, sent here to study our world before her people destroy it.
There is still a storyline here; in fact, there are several ongoing threads, and I'm sensing that some seemingly throwaway scenes and interactions might remain relevant much later in the season. Broadly speaking, the plot follows a man who thinks he has discovered some sort of criminal conspiracy related to a chair company, then starts to lose control of his life as he travels deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. That's easy to get our heads around, even if some of the detours aren't.

Yorgos Lanthimos's macabre and amusing new film has a predictably strong performance from Emma Stone, an intestine-shreddingly clamorous orchestral score from Jerskin Fendrix and, most importantly, a wonderful montage finale but frankly it's a very, very long run-up to that big jump. Added to which, there is the question of whether this bizarre if sometimes heavy-handed black comedy has fully earned its eventual pivot to serious tragic issues in the ending.
