Stuart, a Rhode Island native, hatched a plan to paint Washington for a simple reason: He needed to pay off debts incurred during a decade in Europe. His profligacy had even briefly landed him in a Dublin debtors prison. "I expect to make a fortune by Washington alone," Stuart wrote to a friend, J.D. Herbert, whose writings memorialize the extravagant dinners Stuart threw in Dublin, featuring a French cook.

Bidding starts at $10 million for a painting of Conan the Barbarian that Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett bought from artist Frank Frazetta for $1 million in 2009. The work, titled Conan the Berserker (1967), served as cover art for a paperback edition of Robert E. Howard's novel Conan the Conqueror, and is being offered up in Heritage Auctions ' "Hollywood/Entertainment Signature Auction" December 9-10. Conan looks more than a little triumphant in the painting, with his rippling arms stretched wide as he stares down at some heated battle action against a fiery sky.

Busts by Rodin and works by Kandinksy and Matisse are among some 400 items belonging to the late actor going up for auction next month. Three Golden Globe statues, a variety of film memorabilia and annotated scripts, posters and an easel are also up for sale in the three-stage auction run by Bonhams. The Van Gogh still life has been consigned by the estate of Cindy Pritzker, who died in March, aged 101. Her late husband, Jay Pritzker, built up the Hyatt Hotels chain and died in 1999. Cindy, who was president of the Chicago Public Library board, had a passion for literature. This added to her enthusiasm for Parisian Novels, which depicts 22 books casually strewn across a table, along with a glass with three pink roses.
