Lawren Harris leads the way in Heffel's all-Canadian marquee spring auctions in Toronto
Briefly

The Heffel Fine Art Auction in Toronto featured exclusively Canadian artists and generated C$22 million in sales, reflecting national pride despite economic uncertainties. The event included 85 lots, primarily from renowned Canadian artists like those in the Group of Seven. The auction celebrated local culture, with top artwork Northern Lake by Lawren Harris selling for C$3.1 million. Auction house president David Heffel emphasized a commitment to Canadian art, showcasing significant works from the country's history and encouraging local collectors.
Heffel's past spring and autumn evening sales have often included a few choice works by foreign artists, but last night it was nothing but homegrown talent-what auction house president David Heffel called "our cultural DNA".
Tonight was a true celebration of Canada,' Robert Heffel, the auction house's vice-president, said after the sale.
The top lot of the night was Northern Lake (1926) by the Group of Seven leader Lawren Harris, which realised C$3.1m.
Pelting rain and persistent concerns about tariffs, trade wars, and a recession did little to dampen the mood.
