Dr. Caroline Apovian explains that while stress can lead to overeating, it’s not the cortisol itself that causes weight gain but rather our behavioral responses to stress.
Cortisol is a hormone that triggers an urge to seek out rewards, which in modern times often results in overeating high-sugar and high-fat foods as a way to cope with anxiety.
While increased cortisol levels do not directly make it harder to lose weight, returning to normal eating habits after stress can facilitate weight loss, though long-term overeating may alter body weight set points.
To combat stress instead of turning to food, Apovian recommends vigorous exercise or meditation as effective alternatives to manage anxiety more healthily.
