Hassan Sentamu, a 17-year-old from south London, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering 15-year-old Elianne Andam during a dispute over a teddy bear. Following an altercation outside the Whitgift Centre in Croydon, Sentamu stabbed Elianne in the neck. Although he admitted manslaughter due to his autism spectrum disorder, a jury found him guilty of murder. Justice Cheema-Grubb highlighted the profound loss for Elianne’s family and emphasized community efforts against knife violence, notably referencing a mural dedicated to Elianne as a symbol of remembrance and resolve.
Addressing Sentamu she said: Elianne was 15 when you murdered her. She will always remain just 15, and she will never realize the potential of her life.
Cheema-Grub noted that a mural had been painted for Elianne, near where she was killed. It's presence marks the determination of the community as forcefully as they can put the knives down.
