Monarch butterfly populations have witnessed drastic declines, with the eastern populations dropping over 80% since the 1990s and western populations more than 95% since the 1980s, primarily due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change.
In response to the alarming decline, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature has classified migratory monarch butterflies as threatened on their 'Red List' and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is set to decide on federal protections.
