In the series, titled "I'm Not a Monster: The Lois Riess Murders," Riess, 62, will admit to murdering her husband inside their home, but will "point to alleged emotional abuse in the relationship" as being the motivation for the crime.
"It was just years and years of abuse. I just snapped," she tells the cameras, reflecting on the emotional turmoil that led to the tragic events.
HBO notes, she is "unable to justify her methodical, well-planned crime spree that followed, which included embezzling funds, a second murder of a stranger, identity theft, and a callous, detailed coverup of her crimes."
Riess later claimed in court that David handed her a .22-caliber handgun during their spat and asked her: "Why don't you just kill yourself? Maybe you'll get it right this time." It was at this point that she turned the gun on him.
